WCF PGS
The Western Cape Farmers' Participatory Guarantee System (WCF-PGS) is a collaborative initiative established to support and authenticate organic farming practices in the Western Cape region of South Africa. Founded by Francois and Henriette Malan, Anique Van Der Vlugt, and Charl Hubner, the WCF-PGS aims to provide cost-free organic certification and support for farmers, ensuring standardisation and credibility for consumers and retailers of organic produce.
Purpose and Functioning of WCF-PGS
Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) are locally focused quality assurance systems that certify producers based on active participation of stakeholders and are built on a foundation of trust, social networks, and knowledge exchange. The WCF-PGS operates by conducting annual farm assessments, where members visit each other's farms to verify adherence to organic standards. This peer-review mechanism fosters transparency, mutual learning, and continuous improvement among farmers.
Wild Organics' Involvement
Wild Organics is an active committee member of the WCF-PGS. Our involvement includes participating in annual farm visits and assessments, which facilitate the sharing of information and best practices among organic farmers. This collaboration ensures that consumers receive authentic, sustainable produce with no hidden agendas.
By working closely with the WCF-PGS, Wild Organics supports local organic communities and farmers, reinforcing their commitment to providing high-quality organic produce. Our role in the PGS team involves conducting farm visits to assist and verify farmers' methods and organic standards, especially for smaller farmers who cannot afford formal certification.
Impact on the Community
The collaboration between WCF-PGS and stakeholders like Wild Organics has significantly contributed to the growth and recognition of organic farming in the Western Cape. By offering a participatory and cost-effective certification process, the WCF-PGS empowers small-scale farmers, promotes sustainable agricultural practices, and ensures consumers have access to trustworthy organic products.
Through these collective efforts, the WCF-PGS and its members continue to enhance the integrity and accessibility of organic farming, benefiting both producers and consumers in the region.
